Why Is Chocolate Good For You

With obesity on the rise, chocolate has been given quite a hard time of late. Although, you will be pleased to know, if you pick the right chocolate, it is actually very good for you.

Chocolate which is very high in cocoa solids (at least 70%) contains essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, potassium and vitamins A, B1, C, D and E. It is the highest natural source for magnesium and deficiencies in this are linked with; hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, joint problems and, for ladies, pre-menstrual tension.

The problems start when you pick the wrong chocolate. Cheap, and even some well known brand name chocolates, contain as little as 7% chocolate solids. All of these are high in sugar content, saturated fats and HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil). Consequently this chocolate can have devastating effects on the person’s health, and also their teeth.

The moral of this story? Always read the label! Plain dark chocolate is the very best for you, if you buy this ensure it has a minimum of 70% cacao. If you are a milk chocolate lover choose one which has a minimum of 30%, and if you like white chocolate, it should contain 30% chocolate butter.  This is the very minimum we include at the Salcombe Chocolate Academy and we use locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, as well as sourcing from Fair Trade accredited providers.
